ROMULUS, NY (WSYR-TV) - The Seneca County Sheriff's Office says 52-year old Karl Karlsen of Romulus has been charged with murder for death of his son four years ago.
In 2008, Karlsen told authorities he came home to find his son -- 23-year-old Levi Karlsen -- motionless and pinned under a car that he said had fallen off a jack. At the time, the Seneca County Sheriff said Levi's death appeared to be a tragic accident.
In March of this year, sheriff's investigators developed new information and the case was re-opened.
Detectives learned that a substantial life insurance policy was taken out on Levi days before his death and that Karlsen and his wife were the sole beneficiary.
Circumstances surrounding Levi's death also surfaced. Investigators say the new information indicates Karlsen's actions resulted in the vehicle falling off the jack and that is was not an accident. The sheriff's office tells us Karlsen then pretended to discover what he said was an accident and told his wife to call 911.
The sheriff's office says investigators and insurance fraud investigators are also looking into a 1991 fire in California that took the life of Karlsen's first wife.
Karlsen was arraigned in the town of Seneca Falls Court and sent to the Seneca County Jail without bail.
