Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The State University of New York wants to snuff out smoking on all of its 64 campuses.

The proposed ban would include tobacco use outside or near anything SUNY-related. Smoking has already been banned inside SUNY dorms, buildings and vehicles since 2007.

SUNY says the reason behind the proposed ban is because tobacco use on college campuses is a serious public health issue. If passed, the legislation would place SUNY among the largest public university system in the country to adopt such a policy.
