SU wide receiver arrested on felony drug charges
July 31SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse University football player Marcus Sales was arrested Friday after police say they found drugs and packaging materials in his car.
The 21-year-old plays wide receiver for SU and was instrumental in the team's Pinstripe Bowl victory last season.
Police tell us Marcus and his brother Michael Sales Jr. were pulled over for driving through a red light near the intersection of Midland and Ballantyne Avenues.
Inside the car, police say they found marijuana, an open container of alcohol and 180 Lortab pills. Those pills contain hydrocordone and acetaminophen. Police also found three digital scales and plastic baggies.
Both Marcus and Michael are charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia and fifth and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
According to police, the fifth-degree possession charge accuses the pair of having the pills with intent to sell them.
Marcus Sales is also facing additional charges of passing a red light, consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle and violating the open container law in the city.
Marcus Sales was one of the stars in the Orange’s 2010 Pinstripe Bowl win.
The Christian Brothers Academy Product caught five passes in that game for 172 yards and three touchdowns.
Syracuse University head football coach Doug Marrone released a statement through the University saying, “We are aware of the charges against Marcus Sales. We will continue to work with the proper authorities and the University, and will handle the matter internally, according to University and Athletics Department policies.”
Sales is listed as the starter at wide receiver heading into training camp.
Right now his status with the team is up in the air, as is running back Tyson-Prince Gulley’s.
Gulley, 19, was
stabbed multiple times Friday morning and is still recovering from his injuries.
Marrone will speak to reporters on Tuesday at Big East Media Day in Rhode Island.
Both Marcus and Michael were arraigned in City Court on Saturday and have been released.
