Syracuse (WSYR-TV/CNN) – Scientists may have discovered a new way to fight cancer cells.

According to the Los Angeles Times, researchers from Standford University found that a certain antibody can slow the growth of tumors. Normally, a protein called CD47 prevents immune cells from attacking the tumor.

Now, researchers say an antibody can block that protein, helping the immune system to try to destroy cancer cells. The study found the process, which was tested on mice, worked on several other kinds of cancers.

Researchers have received a grant for $20 million to move the study from mice to humans, according to the publication Science.
