Central New York is going through a change in air masses tonight as cooler and drier air moves into the region. That should lead to a seasonably chilly night, a rarity this mild winter.

The new air mass that moves in tonight is key to tomorrow’s weather. With the cooler and drier air in place, it will deflect an area of low pressure to our south.  This low will track east over the Appalachian Mountains and across the Mid Atlantic states. While we could see some extra cloud cover here in central New York, it appears any precipitation will stay to our south, perhaps flirting with the New York-Pennsylvania border.

With that storm system heading out to sea Wednesday night, high pressure builds in from the west and that will control our weather Thursday and much of Friday.  That will be accompanied with another warm up.  We are not expecting 50 degree weather this time around but we have a real shot at temperatures close to 40 both days which is still quite a bit above normal.

Beyond Friday it does look colder for us. We are still working out the details as there are differences in our computer models that far out in time.  It looks like one shot of cold will come in Saturday with some widespread snow then lake effect. We are seeing some signs from our computer models that we may see another, reinforcing push of cold air for Monday.  Regardless, it looks like there is colder weather in store for us for either 2 or 3 days starting this weekend.
