Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - On Capitol Hill on Wednesday, a House committee heard about security failures leading to the September 11 attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi.
The State Department now acknowledges that only an hour before the outpost was stormed and Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed, the streets were calm, which contradicts earlier statements that the trouble began with demonstrations against an anti-Muslim video.
Senator Chuck Schumer says the US can’t point fingers until the person behind the ambassador’s death is in custody.
“The bottom line is, what we ought to be doing here is figuring out who did this, who killed Ambassador Stevens and go after them,” the Senator said. “And pointing fingers, you know this one’s to blame, that one’s to blame…let them do that after we find him and catch him.”
State Department officials are telling Congress they believed the security levels at the US Consulate in Benghazi were adequate for the threat level on the anniversary of 9/11.
Senior officials say the number of security guards at the compound was consistent with what had been requested.
