TULLY, NY (WSYR-TV) - A father and daughter from Jamesville are keeping skiers safe at Song Mountain in Tully. For Kurt and Stephanie Hill, ski patrol isn't just a hobby, it's in their blood.
“My dad did it. My grandfather did it. It's kind of a family thing,” said Stephanie Hill.
“It's great, it's great. Next generation and it's a great feeling,” said Stephanie’s father Kurt Hill.
The Hill's have patrolled Song Mountain for half a century. Kurt's father was a member of the ski patrol for 50 years. Kurt has been patrolling for 37 years, while this ski season is Stephanie's first year. She trains weekly as a ski patrol candidate with her father's guidance.
“It's fantastic. It's gotten us a lot closer this year, we gets to talk twice a week and ski together,” said Stephanie Hill.
Song Mountain’s owner said it's been a roller coaster of a season.
“In between we've had some thaws and we had half the trails now we're up to all the trails and i'm looking forward to that all the way through the end of March,” said Song Mountain owner Peter Harris.
“Conditions are always different but it's always good skiing,” said Kurt Hill.
That is what draws the Hill family to the mountain every year: opening trails, treating injuries and checking equipment, together.
