BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP/WSYR-TV) - New York education officials say the state's elementary school students scored slightly higher than last year on standardized English and math tests given in the spring.
The state Education Department on Tuesday released the results of the tests taken by all students in third through eighth grade. Overall, 55 percent of students met or exceeded the English proficiency, up from about 53 percent last year. The math scores showed 65 percent met or exceeded the proficiency standard, up from 63 percent last year.
The scores show that black and Hispanic children continue to lag behind their white peers.
Education Commissioner John King says reforms taking effect next year should move more students toward college and career readiness. They include changing the curriculum and the way that teachers are evaluated.
