Camillus (WSYR-TV) -- Snow, not grass, is covering snowmobile trails throughout Central New York this year – a big change from this time last year.
Trails in Camillus saw plenty of traffic on Monday. That’s where NewsChannel 9 caught up with Mario Ruggeri who’s been snowmobiling since he was 17.
“Now I have my wife into it, I have a little baby boy, well, two-and-a-half years old, hopefully we’ll get him into it as well,” Ruggeri told NewsChannel 9.
If there’s any time to get out and take advantage of the snow, it’s now. This year has been much better than last year when snow was extremely hard to come by.
“Right now the trails are great…you couldn’t ask for anything better,” Ruggeri said.
Snowmobilers took a huge hit in 2012, along with businesses that depend on them, including Mario’s M-R Unlimited – a repair shop for snowmobiles.
“Business was tough too, you know, you’re dependent on all those people and a lot of people held off waiting for the snow,” Ruggeri continued. “In the summer time, if you have a motorcycle, if it’s 50 and sunny, you’re riding; if it’s 90 and sunny, you’re riding. Snowmobiles, you have to wait for the snow, there’s no other way of going about it.”
During seasons with a lot of snow, Mario and his friends take the trails in Camillus on trips as long as 600 miles.
Mario says he got in only a total of 30 miles last year, but a late December blast of snow could be a sign of good things to come this winter.
“As long as we can keep these cold temperatures and get a couple of inches every night, you know, it would be great,” Ruggeri said.
If you plan on hitting the trails, you can plot your trip using an interactive map by the New York State Snowmobile Association.
