SYRACUSE (WSRY-TV) Hundreds of post offices across the country are on the verge of being shut down for cost cutting purposes, including two in the Syracuse area. It's an idea that isn't sitting well with some on the South side of the city.
Pauline Finch is 75-years-old, and she still likes to walk to the post office.
"When it's nice out, I'll walk up here because I get to talk to my neighbors that way," said Finch.
But that may change soon. The Elmwood post office is in jeopardy of closing early next year. The U.S. Postal Service is looking for ways to cut costs. Growth of the Internet and healthcare for retirees has left funds low.
"The postal service is just like any family, on a budget," said Maureen Marion, a U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman.
Next week, the 1200 signatures Finch gathered in protest are headed to the postal service headquarters in Washington for review. But she'll have to wait months to find out if her work has paid off.The other post office in jeopardy of closing is on Main Street in North Syracuse.
Along with Finch's signatures, all other petitions, letters, surveys and data collected by local postal service representatives will also be sent to Washington next week.
