NEWARK VALLEY, N.Y. (AP) - A volunteer firefighter has died and another is hospitalized with burns after they fell through the floor of a burning house in New York's Southern Tier.

Renee Fox, a member of the Owego Fire Department, said Tuesday that 34-year-old Matthew Porcari died and 28-year-old Daniel Gavin is in the burn unit at University Hospital in Syracuse. The Owego firefighters were injured fighting a late-night blaze that destroyed a house in rural Newark Valley, about 60 miles south of Syracuse in Tioga County.

State fire investigators and the Tioga County Sheriff's office were at the scene of the fire Tuesday. At least six fire departments responded to a mutual aid call to fight the fire.
