ELMIRA, N.Y. (AP) - A 27-year-old Southern Tier woman faces manslaughter charges in the death of her 15-month-old son.

A Chemung County grand jury indicted Nicole Freeman-Sager of Van Etten on charges of first- and second-degree manslaughter for the death of Jason Shappee.

According to the indictment, Freeman-Sager violently shook the toddler on May 30, causing swelling and bleeding in his brain. She was originally charged with felony reckless assault on a child. State police say the baby died at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville on June 2.

Freeman-Sager remains in Chemung County Jail on $250,000 bail. Court officials weren't available to say whether she has a lawyer.

Van Etten is 60 miles south of Syracuse.
