Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Bridge construction that was slated to close a section of I-690 Friday through Monday has been postponed until next weekend.

The state Department of Transportation says the change was made to prevent backups as fans traveled to Syracuse University's football game against the University of Connecticut tonight at the Carrier Dome.

There are no games scheduled at the Dome next weekend.

The DOT says Governor Cuomo’s "Drivers First" initiative that was announced last month requires the agency to carefully consider the needs of travelers when performing road work.

"I had an opportunity to review the Central New York construction schedule last night and again this morning and the game raised a red flag with me," State Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald told NewsChannel 9. "I used my professional judgement and decided that because of the potential impact to the community it made sense to suspend the construction this weekend and do it next weekend."

She said the contractor had just begun to set up barriers when she gave the order to stop the work and reopen the highway.
