Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The New York State Health Department is warning against eating any fish caught in areas with visible blooms of blue-green algae.

The microscopic algae are naturally present in lakes and streams, but can mass in warm, shallow surface water. The health department says most of the algae is harmless, but some can produce toxins. Likewise, people and pets should not drink the water or swim where blooms discolor the water or form surface scum.

Risks include nausea, vomiting, skin irritation and allergic reactions.
