GENESEO, N.Y. (AP) - State Police say a man has been hospitalized after a trooper shot him in the shoulder to prevent him from shooting his father.

The Livingston County Sheriff's office and state police were called around 10:45 p.m. Monday to home in Geneseo, 25 miles southwest of Rochester, for a report of a suicidal man. Troopers say when they got there, Kevin Walsh was trying to calm down his son, Greg Walsh, who was holding a long gun.

After a struggle over the weapon, police say the son struck his father with the gun butt and then pointed the weapon at him. A trooper told him to put it down and when he didn't, the trooper shot him in the shoulder.

Greg Walsh was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
