Wolcott (WSYR-TV) – According to the New York State Comptroller’s Office, a former Village of Wolcott clerk pilfered nearly $70,000 from the village over a four year period.

State Police have charged Melanie DeBadts, 35, with one count of grand larceny in the second degree and 106 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, both felonies.

DeBadts was arraigned on Wednesday. She is scheduled to appear in Wolcott Village Court on June 7.

According to the comptroller’s audit, DeBadts altered records to disguise extra payments that she collected.

In total, she stole $68,479 from the village using a number of avenues from extra payroll checks to unauthorized overtime to unearned leave payouts, according to the comptroller's office.

The investigation into financial irregularities in the village began in September. DeBadts resigned effective Sept. 15.
