State warns about “smishing” scam
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - The State's Consumer Protection Division is warning people about text messages posing as bank alerts, asking you to confirm account information.
The scam texts - known as "smishing" - are just another way to steal your personal information.
The details of the scam vary.
Banks of all sizes - from local businesses to multi-national institutions - have been targeted by scammers.
Scam texts use a variety of messages and techniques but all desire the same outcome.
If you call a number or go to a website included in a fake text message, scammers will be able to use that opportunity to obtain your banking information.
If you receive a bogus text, you are urged to not respond or share any information.
