Syracuse (WSYR-TV) Hundreds of 9th, 10th and 11th graders spent their day at Green Lakes State Park Friday. They weren't just there to soak up the sun, though.
Their visit is part of a partnership to help with this year's spring cleaning.
Tom Hughes, a natural resource steward biologist at state parks for the Central and Finger Lakes region, says, “What we did was we had a learning experience in addition to a stewardship, or service project, where they actually worked with naturalists and students from SUNY ESF and did nature hikes, and then that was followed by stewardship projects.”
Aliki Ilious, a senior at Manlius Pebble Hill, says "it's just really important to get the community together and to help out Green Lakes because it's part of the community and to just all work together and make it a better place for everyone."
In return for their hard work, the students get to use the park as an outdoor classroom.
