The weather over central New York will be dominated by high pressure for the rest of the work week. That means you can expect generally quiet weather into the start of the weekend. The only chance of any precipitation during this time will come in the form of some lake effect snow showers from now through tomorrow night. The air aloft will still be cool enough while winds in the lower atmosphere will be out of the west-southwest which puts the best chance for snow showers north of Syracuse, in particular, over the Tug Hill. Outside this lake effect our weather will be dry.
With high pressure in control, look for a gradual warming trend with our weather over the next few days. We will squeeze every inch of warming we can get out of a sun that is only one week away from the Winter Solstice and is nearly at its lowest point in our sky. We figure temperatures will manage to warm into the mid to upper 40s by later in the week which will be almost 10 degrees above normal for this time of year.
A weak cold front will move through central New York Friday night but it is starved for moisture and we aren’t expecting any precipitation. Instead, a slightly cooler air mass will follow the front, easing our temperatures back a bit as we start the weekend.
The next significant weather system that will impact the region is headed east toward us for Sunday and Monday. The models are coming into better agreement that low pressure will initially track northeast into the Great Lakes Sunday before a secondary area of low pressure forms off the New England coast on Monday. Temperatures will be borderline for wintry precipitation during this time. We’ll keep you posted.
