Auburn (WSYR-TV) – It was a wild scene Friday morning on Route 5 in Auburn, where state police finally arrested a person wanted for stealing a car.
But before it was done, the chase covered two counties and more than 40 miles.
More than half a dozen Auburn City and state police vehicles lined the arterial along Route 5 in Auburn shortly after the chase came to an end at about 10:15 a.m.
It all started to unfold just after 9:30 Friday morning along Seymour and Shonnard streets. Police say John Besaw of Centennial Drive in Syracuse stole a white Toyota Yaris and took off.
With police in pursuit, Besaw got onto 690 West; from there, and with police hot on his tail, he veered onto 695.
State police soon joined in as the car exited onto Route 5, through Elbridge, across the Cayuga County line, and through the City of Auburn, where the driver of the car drove off the road and into some brush.
At that point, Auburn police had joined in too; Besaw got out of the car and started to run, but was quickly tracked down and placed under arrest.
Syracuse police are now handling the investigation, and say Besaw is facing charges of criminal possession of stolen property, grand larceny, and a number of vehicle and traffic violations.
Despite the wild ride, no motorists or pedestrians were hurt.
Police are continuing to investigate what happened.
