Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Three abused and neglected dogs discovered in separate areas of the city of Syracuse are now in caring hands, according to Stephanie Higgins with the Syracuse Pit Crew.

One of the dogs was found with open wounds and his nails were ripped out his paws. The other two dogs were extremely malnourished, Higgins said.

Helping abused and neglected dogs is part of the Syracuse Pit Crew’s mission.

“There’s a need for it, particularly in the city, there’s an epidemic of abuse and neglect of animals. The ‘three musketeers’ as I refer to them, are examples of that abuse,” Higgins told NewsChannel 9.

One arrest has been made in connection with the wounded dog. His owner was charged with a misdemeanor.
