Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A Syracuse-area doctor received special recognition on Thursday when he was presented with the Hospice of Central New York’s annual Anita Award.

Dr. Benny Wong, an area oncologist, was nominated by Sherry Den Bleyker of Kirkville. Wong treated her husband.

“He sat down. He took his time. He listened. It was just an instant bond between the two of them and for my husband to look at me and say ‘I like him’ that was a shock,” Den Bleyker said.

The award recognizes local doctors for their care of patients with life-threatening or terminal illnesses.

The Anita Award was named in memory of Anita Stockman, a former hospice patient.
