Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - If you have a teenager looking for a summer job, the numbers on paper don't look great again this year.
For about three years, the youth unemployment rate has hovered around 16 percent.
The best thing young people can do is start looking for a summer job now.
CNY Works tells us many teens wait until school gets out to start looking, and by that time a lot of employers have already hired.
In our area, CNY Works says not as many jobs are available, possibly because adults are taking those positions because they were laid off or they're looking to pick up a second job.
They tell us teens can set themselves a part by actively going to businesses and introducing themselves to a manger when they turn in an application.
CNY Works’ Youth Services Manager Andrea Hahan says, “There are jobs out there. There may not be as many or in the specific field that you're looking for, but it's a summer job. It's always great to get more skills and put that on your resume.”
CNY Works runs its own summer youth program to help place around 500 young people in jobs.
Many of them are with Syracuse University and parks and recreation for the city.
That program is competitive, too. Of the 1,000 applications they get, only about half actually end up with jobs.
