Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – The dangers of distracted driving and texting behind the wheel are well known, but what about distracted walking?
You can spot many fairgoers making their way through the crowds texting while walking.
“I’ve run into a few people in my time, texting and just not looking up,” said Joie Grimaldi. A national study
estimates texting and walking landed more than 1,500 people in emergency rooms in 2010.
And that number seems to be growing every year.
"I’ve seen patients that have been hurt by walking and texting, tripping over [things and] hitting their face,” said Dr. Jeremy Joslin with Upstate University Hospital.
“There are people doing it all over the place right now,” said Mia Malchack. "The other day when I was here, I body slammed right into a guy.”
It's not always a phone grabbing your attention. Sometimes it's a map or even some delicious fair food.
With so much to see and do at the fair, health experts have some helpful advice.
"Just be alert to where you’re walking and stay safe,” Joslin said.
