Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - If you're flying Thanksgiving weekend, you'll likely notice airports aren't as busy as they usually are for the holiday. The Air Transport Association is predicting air travel to be down this weekend for the second year in a row.
Security lines Wednesday morning at Hancock Airport were short, if there was any wait at all. Hancock expected about 3,200 people to fly out, down about 400 from last year. For the whole weekend they expected about 12,500, about 2,300 less than last year.
Airlines are using smaller aircraft, which means fewer seats were available to begin with.
Some travelers who booked last-minute thanksgiving flights are also paying new surcharges this year - between ten and thirty dollars each way, depending on the airline. You can expect to pay these "peak travel" surcharges if you fly at Christmas and on several high-demand travel dates in the spring. The surcharges are designed to make up for $4 billion in losses this year.
