DeWitt (WSYR-TV) - DeWitt Police are investigating an overnight break-in at the East Area Volunteer Emergency Services Ambulance headquarters on New Venture Gear Drive after it was reported early Friday morning.
The break-in was discovered after rescue crews returned from an incident nearby. They were stunned to discover the theft of a 75K Honda generator.
"What kind of a lowlife steals from an ambulance service?" said EAVES Director of Operations Vincent Stevenson. "We're here to serve the public and protect people and they're stealing from us. It just doesn't make any sense to me."
After sunrise, crews were able to determine that the generator was the only item stolen from the equipment trailer.
The crew was responding to an incident in which a truck driver had been stabbed while fending off an individual or individuals who were trying to rob his vehicle.
Stevenson noted that driver was not seriously injured, but he was transported to the hospital.
When the crew returned to EAVES headquarters, the doors to trailers housing their equipment had been forced open.
A local company that requested anonymity donated a generator to EAVES to replace the $3,000 piece of critical equipment.
