Greece (WSYR-TV/WROC-TV) – The Coast Guard rescued three men from a frigid pond west of Rochester on Sunday.
Firefighters say the men were on a water craft on Long Pond in the Monroe County town of Greece.
The three left their equipment in the water and decided to test the ice - firefighters say that's when they fell into the water.
Two were treated by medical personnel at the scene, and another was transported to the hospital for possible hypothermia. A firefighter is being treated for a back injury.
James O'Coin with the Lakeshore Fire District said, "The ponds might not be deep but what you have is, number one, the water is very, very cold. So, you get that initial shock of going in the water, you're going to have hypothermia. The pond base is all muck. At that point, you're just struggling to get out. The harder you struggle, the deeper you're going to get yourself into it."
Crews also had to pull two fishermen from the icy water on Saturday afternoon.
