Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Most dog owners in populated areas know how stressful July 4 can be as fireworks crackle in the air and light up the night sky.
Some dogs bark, while others hide under beds.
Some ways to keep your dog safe include:
- Keep your pet in a room that doesn’t have glass or windows
- Play loud music to mask the noise
- Purchase items designed to calm dogs
“There also are products out on the market called ‘Thundershirts’…calming caps you can put on your dog that give them some kind of anxiety relief. There are pheromones that you can purchase…you can talk to your veterinarian about getting sedatives so that your dog can ride through these events without a lot of distress,” said veterinarian Dr. Annette Otis.
With some preparation time, a dog owner can purchase CDs featuring sounds of thunderstorms so that the dog becomes accustomed to similar loud noises.
ABC recently posted a story on keeping dogs calm during fireworks on their website. In addition, famous dog handler
Caesar Milan offers some advice on his website.
