Mattydale (WSYR-TV) -- A toddler who was assaulted by a town of Salina man on New Year’s Eve has died, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say 2-year-old Danielle Cashaw, of Enders Drive in Mattydale, was removed from life support Thursday -- a decision made by her mother and doctors at Upstate University Hospital.

21-year-old Sharif K. Hamilton, who resided with the child and her mother, was initially charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Deputies say the child suffered a number of injuries.

“I should make it clear that the Sheriff's Department and our office from the onset, having dealt with cases like this before, knew it was going to end up being a homicide. That's how bad a shape the little girl was in,” said First Chief Assistant District Attorney Rick Trunfio.

Trunfio says Hamilton told a number of stories, but they have no motive and awaiting autopsy results. The case will presented to a grand jury for consideration of other charges.

Hamilton is being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center on $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond.
