Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A much anticipated North Side grocery store held its grand opening on Tuesday.

Tops’ newest location in Central New York opened at a building once occupied by the region’s oldest Wegmans.

Tops bought the building in September shortly after Wegmans closed the historic location.

The employees at the Pond Street Wegmans were offered jobs at other stores in Central New York.

Company officials say they have already hired more than 90 new employees and anticipate hiring more.

They say the community's high number of immigrants and older people made it a good fit.

The company also recently opened up a highly anticipated store in the city's Valley area.

They donate $500 to numerous charities and organizations, many of which are associated with the city's North Side, including:

Tops gave a $500 donation to a number of local charities/groups:
  • Interfaith Works - Center for New Americans
  • Vinette Towers
  • Northeast Community Center Food Pantry
  • Interfaith Food Pantry
  • Assumption Church
  • Northside Food Pantry
  • All Faith Food Pantry
  • Ross Towers
  • Open Hand Theater
