Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Starting at 9 a.m. today, State Department of Transportation crews will begin work to replace the bridge deck on 481 over Kirkville Road.

The closure is scheduled to run through Monday, December 3 at noon.

State DOT officials say the detours will be clearly marked, helping drivers navigate their way around the closure.

They say 13,000 cars a day will be redirected, while the bridge deck is being replaced.

“We're moving the bridge deck itself - so it needs a place to be dropped down. By closing off traffic on Kirkville Road itself, we can allow the bridge deck to be dropped down completely and safely,” said New York State DOT representative Gene Cilento.

He noted that there are no plans in place to switch out the southbound bridge deck because heavier trucks use the northbound lanes more often.

“I think northbound decks are a little bit worse because the loaded trucks from the Jamesville Quarry head over that - and they're coming back empty in the south bound direction, so there's not as much ware and tear on those decks,” Cilento said.

The 481 project is scheduled to be the DOT’s last until the spring. It's one of a number of projects slated for completion as part of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s New York Works programs.
