Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A UN envoy says there is evidence that a chemical substance was used in the killing of possibly more than 1,000 people in Syria.
“It does seem that some kind of substance was used that killed a lot of people – hundreds, definitely more than hundreds,” U.N.-Arab League special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said in a press conference in Geneva
The envoy made the statement two days after UN inspectors visited the scene of the incident in a Damascus suburb.
The US has avoided conflict with Syria while civil war has raged within the Middle Eastern nation.
A senior Defense Department official told CNN
, however, that any strike could be completed "within several days."
The United Kingdom is in the process of putting together a UN resolution condemning the incident, the BBC says
