Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - It isn’t just same-sex couples applauding the US Supreme Court's decision, some members of the Catholic Church are also celebrating the landmark decision.
Father Fred Daley, Pastor of All Saints Church in Syracuse is openly gay and says he is excited to celebrate this step forward in civil rights.
He says while his religion may not be in full support, many within the Catholic Church are gradually changing how they view homosexuality.
"Our own Pope Francis - when he was Cardinal in Buenos Aires - a gay marriage bill was in his country and he invited the bishops of his country to consider a compromise with civil union. That’s a huge change from the attitude of most Catholic hierarchy,” Daley said. “We’re a family in change and the bottom line is if you ever have to choose between a law and compassion, we must always go with compassion."
He says while Wednesday’s decision does not change the rules within the Catholic Church, he is excited to see equality for all people being recognized.
