LaFayette, NY - (WSYR-TV) - An early morning fire destroyed a tanker truck at the Beak and Skiff apple farm in LaFayette. The truck was located close to some of the apple trees, but none were damaged.
The tanker that caught fire was located about a quarter-mile off the Route 20, but flames could be seen from the highway.
12 departments were called in to fight the fire, which involved a tanker filled with 1,000 gallons of fuel in it.
Mark Fleckenstein, with Beak and Skiff, says fire investigators could not immediately say what started the fire. Fleckenstein says the fire could have somehow just started or it couldhave been vandalism. He says there is no way of knowing at this point.
The Department of Environmental Conservation was at the orchard Thursday to see if there were any contamination issues at the scene of the fire. The early indication was everything was safe.
Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading and damaging the apple trees.
