SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) – Three Syracuse police officers are recovering from smoke inhalation after evacuating residents from an apartment complex that caught fire Sunday morning.

Police were the first to respond to the fire on West Onondaga Avenue, and they say one of their officers, Angela Mahar spotted the fire, and she, along with Chris Dominick and Jeff McManus, were able to safely rescue two occupants from the burning building.

Syracuse Fire Chief Bill Mitson says the fire started just before two o’clock Sunday morning in a basement apartment.  He says the people living there tried to put out the fire before calling for help.

Fire investigators say the fire originated in a living room sofa, ignited by careless smoking.

Fire crews were able to keep all of the damage to the one apartment where the fire started.

No residents or firefighters were injured during the fire.
