BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) - The Greater Binghamton Airport has a new state-of-the-art runway safety system designed to keep planes from tumbling off the end in case of an accident.

The Engineered Material Arrestor System is part of a $13 million upgrade that officials hope will bring more traffic to the airport.

The work included extending the runway to 7,300 feet.

A host of state and local officials were on hand to announce the project's completion on Thursday.

The project used $12.3 million in federal funds and $324,000 each from the state and the airport.
