Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A coalition of Syracuse residents and community organizations is pushing to make sure local workers are hired to help redevelop the city’s Inner Harbor area.
Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide is set to bring a hotel to the Harbor, with development beginning in March.
It's all part of a $350 million dollar renovation plan that also includes residential, office, and retail space.
The new hotel is set to bring more than 500 jobs to the area.
Representatives from the Urban Jobs Task Force are meeting with city officials to argue that developers of the new hotel should hire workers who live in Syracuse.
The task force has also created a legal agreement for developers to make sure those jobs go to local people.
“It’s called a first-source hiring process where city residents are first choice on the job – and especially unemployed city residents. And then there’s workforce development money in there so that if they need some training, it will get them that training. And then we’d also have apprenticeships in there so that people can get into apprenticeships, because that’s really hard,” said Aggie Lane of the Urban Jobs Task Force.
The meeting is being held on the steps of city hall.
