Utica (WSYR-TV) - The Utica Police Department unveiled some new hi-tech equipment on Friday.
A lighter, more accurate patrol rifle and other new weapons were introduced along with an L-Rad, or ‘long-range acoustic device.’
The $8,000 portable device can broadcast pre-recorded messages and alerts up to 1,000 yards.
The L-Rad acts as a PA system, or speaker, that is capable of propelling sound through walls, which is necessary in the event of a hostage situation or large crowds.
"I've operated this device at 15 feet and hid behind my vehicle and still had earplugs in - it's still very loud. It emits a loud tone following our requests to disperse," said Sergeant Samuel Geddes with the Utica Police Department.
The L-Rad can transmit messages in several different languages and it's the only one of its kind in the area.
