Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Vascular disease claims hundreds of lives every year. It can cause strokes, poor circulation and even the silent killer – an aneurysm rupture. More than 20 million people are at risk, but it mostly affects those over 55.

Upstate Medical University is helping Central New Yorkers, by giving a free screening to catch the disease before it attacks the body.

For decades, Sam Matrone has struggled with the side effects of two collapsed lungs.

“What happened to me is that several times it collapsed and I had to have surgery to correct the collapsed lung, both sides, and I was only 19 then,” he said.

There was no medical reason for his lung to collapse. So now, at 69, he’s doing everything he can to stay alive. It’s the reason he takes part in screenings. The same goes for Rosemary Fenneman, who’s been healthy now for 80 years.

“As we get older, things come up and no one really wants to know, but these free screenings are fabulous,” said Fenneman.

The procedure isn’t painful and it only takes about seven minutes. It tests for three things: to see if you’re at risk for stroke, an aneurysm or Peripheral Arterial Disease.
And even though vascular disease mostly affects those over 55, it’s never too early to get screened.

An ultrasound is used to spot any blockages in your arteries and then, it’s time for the results.

“If you want to live long and enjoy life, you should stay on top of your health,” Matrone says.

Early detection of vascular disease through screening can lead to proper treatment and ultimately save more lives.
