Syracuse (WSYR-TV/ABC News) – A Venezuelan government official announced on Tuesday that President Hugo Chavez has died.
The 58-year-old president had been fighting cancer and had recently sought treatment in a Cuban clinic.
The so-called socialist leader had been elected in 1999 with popular support from the country’s poor.
During his reign, Chavez was a thorn in the side of the United States.
