Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Twenty-two years ago, a bomb went off onboard Pan Am 103 as it was flying over Lockerbie Scotland. Among the victims were 35 Syracuse University students, two Oswego State students and a Town of Clay Couple. A service in the victims' honor was held on SU's campus Tuesday afternoon.

In addition to the service held at SU's Hendricks Chapel, the Crouse Chimes were sounded 35 times - once for each victim from the University. A group also laid flowers at the monument to the victims in front of the Hall of Languages.

"This day of remembrance is a way that we honor those who perished and a way in which we call ourselves forward in the future so events like this might never happen in the future. By remembering the past we change our future," said Tiffany Steinwert during the ceremony.

The only person ever convicted for the bombing, Abdel Baset Al-Megrahi was released from prison last year on compassionate grounds amidst international controversy. Doctors said he had only three months to live, but that turned out to be false. Al-Megrahi is currently living in his home country of Libya.
