Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Plans are in place to honor the memory of a local soldier who died in Afghanistan on Sunday.

23-year-old Spec. Kyle R. Rookey died in Jalalabad in a non-combat related incident, according to the Department of Defense. Officials gave no other details about his passing.

Now, family and friends are planning to honor his memory with a candlelight vigil.

The vigil will be held at Fort Ontario on Friday at 9 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

In addition, Governor Cuomo has asked that flags be flown at half-staff in Rookey’s honor.

Those who plan on attending the vigil are asked to bring candles, lighters, cups for wax and flags.
