For much of central New York it will be a warm, humid but dry afternoon. However, we are watching a disturbance in the jet stream winds aloft passing just easy of I-81. This will help cause at least a few spotty showers that will track into eastern New York by later in the day.
A retreating warm front will move into Canada tonight and tomorrow as low pressure moves east along the boundary into southern Canada. Consequently, hot air will be forced east into the Northeast. In fact, record heat is likely as high temperatures reach the upper 90s to near 100! The record high is 94 set in 1999, this should be easily surpassed. Whether we hit 100 or not, tomorrow looks to be the hottest day of the summer so far.
Hitting 100 in Syracuse is not the easiest thing to do as weather conditions need to come together just right. History tells us we need to have a brisk west to southwest wind…we’ll have that, a warm start (though it wouldn’t hurt to have it warmer than the projected low of 70) and a fair amount of sun. The one thing that may prevent us from hitting 100 is that we may start to pop clouds, and possibly thunderstorms, in the afternoon. If clouds and/or t-storms develop too soon, even an hour or two too early, then hitting 100 won’t happen. Some storms later tomorrow and tomorrow night could be strong to severe.
Eventually, the front mentioned will drop south as a cold front and bring a better chance for showers and storms Wednesday. Much cooler and less humid air will be here to end the work week. Warming temperatures look likely for the upcoming weekend.
