Tompkins County (WSYR-TV) – Tompkins County health officials are warning residents that a case of canine distemper was found in a sick skunk picked up in the Cayuga Heights area. The disease can spread among wildlife and can be transmitted to dogs.

Canine distemper is contagious and often fatal. Your dog is most at risk if he’s very young, very old or not fully vaccinated.

The SPCA is reminding all pet owners to check with their vet to be sure all of their shots are up to date.
