Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Some downtown restaurants are still dealing with the aftermath of Tuesday’s water main break that flooded Walton Street in Armory Square
. While just about every establishment is back open, some are being forced to operate under a boil water order.
All the affected restaurants are located in the 200 block of Walton Street, which get their water from the broken water main.
Sakana-Ya, Namu, Provisions Bakery and LoFo are the restaurants that have been affected.
As a precaution and by law, the Department of Health is required to test the water twice before lifting the order. The first test is done and the results of the second should be ready by Thursday.
Until then, the above mentioned restaurants are open, but certainly will be a little inconvenienced in the meantime.
“You don’t realize how much you take using clean water from the tap for granted,” said LoFo owner Abigail Henson.
LoFo opened just a few months ago and was forced to temporarily close after the water main break. They were back in business in time for lunch on Wednesday, and their stove top has been busy ever since.
"That's kind of how we've been dealing with it. Boiling them, taking them off, putting another pot back on, so we always have two or three pots back there going,” continued Henson.
They mostly use water for washing dishes, hands and vegetables. Luckily, their shakes are made with bagged ice, the aquaponic salad comes pre-washed and their soup was made pre-water main break.
The boil water advisory meant no coffee Wednesday morning at Provisions Bakery.
Otherwise, it’s been business as usual.
There have been extra ice and water deliveries at Sakana Ya and Namu.
And LoFo plans to be open for breakfast again on Thursday morning at seven.
The Health Department is also checking chlorine levels, which are fine right now. And being that it’s the middle of Downtown Dining Week, the downtown committee wants to remind and reassure everyone that every restaurant is taking part and is back open.
