VIRGIL (WSYR-TV) -- Most area ski resorts remained quiet this weekend, waiting the cold weather and snow. But one local resort is planning on opening its doors in a week regardless. But Greek Peak's newest attraction has more to do with warm weather than the cold.
In just about a week, a lot of kids will have the chance to run around the resort’s new 46,000 square-foot water park.
Owner Al Kryger's goal is to make Greek Peak into a place where people can come and stay for more than a day. He hopes the $11-million park and adjoining $45-million spa and hotel will do the trick.
“These are the elements of a destination that make it year-round, and we're pretty excited,” owner Al Kryger said.
Kryger also sees the park bringing in business from out of state.
“One of the nice things about the project is it also benefits Cortland restaurants and gas stations,” Kryger said.
That’s one spill-over effect from a project that's expected to attract 100,000 more people to the resort and bring in up to $15-million more a year.
“It takes some of the sting out of bad ski seasons when people wouldn't come,” Kryger said.
So even if the weather doesn't turn cold soon, Greek Peak visitors can ride down a slide rather than the side of a mountain.
