Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Two weeks after closing the Pond Street Wegmans store on Syracuse’s North Side, the company announced that it has signed an agreement to sell the building.

The company announced on Monday that it has signed in principle an agreement to sell the store to Morgan Acquisitions LLC, which has indicated that it will lease the space to a grocer.

The Pond Street Wegmans in the heart of the city’s North Side was the company’s first store in the Syracuse Division, which includes all of its Onondaga County locations.

Some residents in the area around the store launched a campaign to make sure the location was replaced with a grocer.

The city of Syracuse also expressed a strong desire for a grocery store to move into the area, which has a significant refugee population.

Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner was quoted in a press release from Wegmans:

“Today is a victory for residents of the North Side. Wegmans has made a decision which accommodates a critical interest of this neighborhood. In these past weeks as I have worked with Wegmans officials, I have been impressed by their professional approach and willingness to listen. On behalf of our community I want to credit Wegmans for putting the neighborhood first as they weighed offers for the reuse of this property.”

The company did not indicate what grocer would occupy the space.
