On the midday weather map, low pressure is located near Chicago with a warm front snaking from the low south and east through the Mid-West and Tennessee Valley regions. A cold front slices south and west from the same low center and stretches from Illinois to Texas. Over the next 48-72 hours, this low and associated frontal boundary is forecast to move northeast and impact Central New York.
By tomorrow morning, the low should be centered somewhere between Buffalo and Detroit with a warm front closing in on the Empire State. While we’ll receive scattered showers later this afternoon, more widespread and heavier rain is likely to occur later tonight and tomorrow as low pressure and the warm front close in on the region. By early to mid-evening tomorrow, the cold front is forecast to move through the region and should be well east of the region by early Wednesday morning.
Even after the low and cold front pass, we will still be a risk for showers Wednesday and Thursday as low pressure in the upper atmosphere, or an upper low, will lag behind and move through the region. Eventually, drier and cooler air will move in later this week and set the stage for a nice (but cool) end to the work week.
Looking ahead to the weekend, high pressure will build over the region for Saturday and should supply the region with a sensational day. Sunday’s weather is not so certain as there are some indications that a front may provide a few scattered showers for Mother’s Day. Regardless, high temperatures will be warmer as both days should feature temperatures reaching or exceeding 70.
