Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- It’s been several weeks, but we’ve finally dipped below the $4 a gallon mark for gas in Syracuse. The average now stands at $3.99 for a gallon of regular. That’s down a dime from what it’s high was less than a month ago.

It looks like at least in the short term gas prices should continue to drop, but just how much and for how long is hard to nail down.

It was almost eight years ago that we reached a different kind of milestone when it came to gas, one that was absolutely unbearable for drivers -- we had hit the $2 mark. Flash forward to today and we consider ourselves lucky if we can find gas for $3.91.

“I remember the two dollar and something days, but yeah, under four dollars is pretty much the average,” said driver, Donnie Smith.

Needless to say, drivers are not happy with current gas prices – even though they have gone down slightly. Nowadays, anything under $4 looks like a bargain.

“I think it needs to get down into the low threes,” said driver, Patrick Marx. "I remember when it was really cheap to fill up and it’s been a long time since then and I'm waiting to get back to those days. I doubt they'll ever come back."

Driver Michelle McConnell thinks $3.50 per gallon is reasonable.

“I think at this point, when it was down around $3.50, I think that was pretty reasonable,” she said.

Daniel Layow says he’s come to accept prices around the $4 mark.

Earlier this year, gas prices started to rise and analysts were predicting $5 a gallon by May. For now though, drivers have just gotten used to paying around $4.

"I think that the price is fine right now that they've decreased, but I would hope in the future, over the summer, they would come down even a little bit more," Laurel Kernan said.

Some statistics are still hanging at, or above, the $4 mark, but the downward trend in prices probably won't continue.
