Western, Oneida County (WSYR-TV) - The driver of a car in a crash in the Oneida County town of Western on Saturday is facing vehicular assault and driving while intoxicated charges.
The crash happened at 9:56 a.m.
The Oneida County Sheriff's Office said 47-year-old Grace Pirillo, of Rome, was driving north on Elmer Hill Road when she lost control on a curve and hit road sign.
Investigators said she then traveled onto the lawn of a home and struck the rear of a parked pickup truck in the driveway.
Pirillo's vehicle then spun sideways and hit the corner of the house. No one was in the home.
Pirillo was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital for treatment of ribs, neck, and back pain.
Her front seat passenger, 53-year-old Mark Salerno, of Oriskany, was taken to Rome Memorial Hospital with severe head injuries before being taken to Upstate University Hospital.
Salermo is in critical condition.
Investigators said Pirillo and Salerno were both wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Pirillo is facing several charges:
- Vehicular Assault in the 1st degree, a Class-D Felony
- Vehicular Assault in the 2nd Degree, a Class-E Felony
- Driving While Intoxicated.
Pirillo was arraigned in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and remanded to the custody of the Oneida County Correctional Facility on $50,000 cash bail.
Pirillo is due back in court at a later date and time.
The incident is still under investigation.
